Our taster session is a brilliant way to get a feel for working with clay. This taster is for you if you are a beginner and you want to learn the different shaping techniques and get a first sense of how to use clay to shape an idea or if you have done a different course and want to make a 2-3 pieces of dinnerware.

 

Clay is a very friendly, rewarding and forgiving material with many secrets to share that is why we love it! Whether you book for yourself or a group of friends, this is a wonderfully social and spirited introduction to the joys of creating! We like to keep classes small, so each course has a max of 10 people per class allowing for a more intimate and relaxing experience. The price includes all clay, materials, and firings.

 

ABOUT THE COURSE:

Please read the notes below on what to expect before joining us for your course. On the day we advise you to bring an apron or wear old clothes as they might get a bit dirty, but don't worry clay is easy to wash off. Welcome to a journey of inspiration & fun!

 

At the end of each course, calculate roughly 15 minutes to clean your station, and tools and make the difficult decision of choosing which of the wonderful creations you want to fire.

 

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Be Prepared To Get Messy!
Bring an apron, unless you don’t mind walking around in clay-splattered clothes for the rest of the day. Don’t worry it is a fun kind of messiness and it cleans right up with a wash!

Stay Centred
It can take a while to centre your clay and figure out how to stick to it, everyone takes a while to get used to but TOTALLY worth it when you get it!

Go Slow
Any quick movements can be the beginning of the end, clay is patient and requests patience in return - enjoy the serenity.

Be Philosophical
Just when it looks like you’ve made a beautiful vase, it collapses! Take a deep breath and start again. That one wasn’t meant to be. You will know when you have THE ONE!

Relax & Let The Creativity Flow
Keep Calm and know that Sofia & her team are here for any questions. Focus on your ideas, the shapes, textures and forms - really, the sky is the limit!

 

Stay Energised

On the day we will provide some home-cooked recipes of something sweet and something savoury to keep energy at high levels. We will also have freshly brewed coffee and tea.

 

On the day

We start the course with a quick run-through of the movements from the techniques we using and show you how to use the forms to your advantage in shaping your tableware. Then it is time to get creating! 

During the workshop you will create: 1x Plate, 1x Bowl and /or a Cup or smaller Bowl using our forms and different techniques then you will use the tools to trim, carve, print and colour inside. You are welcome to play and experiment as much as you like within these two hours. W will mainly use handbuilding techniques for this class.

 

Once complete we will show you how to tuck your creations away safely to dry. We will fire everything for you and once they are ready we will contact you to come to pick them up or ship them.

Clean before you go-go
At the end of the course, calculate roughly 15  minutes to clean your station and tools!

What colour will it be?

We usually use a white matte glaze to glaze all of the creations, but if you are lucky and we have an order for a restaurant that is a colour that you like we can make an exception for you.

 

How long to get reunited?
Classwork is usually ready in 4-6 weeks. We will notify you by email and you can pop by the studio to collect your pieces.

 

 

DIRECTIONS:

Make your way to 23 Alphabet Mews, London SW9 0FN. We are inside Vincen't Yard at the end of the Alphabet Mews. Our studio is located on the ground floor. Give us a call if you have any problem locating us.

 

There is no parking inside the yard but there are available spaces in the streets around.

CANCELATION POLICY.

We are not able to offer refunds for Taster Class bookings, so be sure to double-check your dates before booking. However, we also realise that the unexpected happens and that a degree of flexibility is appreciated. We therefore allow transfers to other Taster Classes up until 14 days prior to the class. Within 14 days of the class, exchanges are not allowed but you can pass your spot on to a friend or family member. For any change in your booking to a different course there is a £10 admin fee.
